US Airways seeks to end contracts, cut benefits

US Airways on Friday asked a bankruptcy judge for permission to cancel existing contracts with three unions, reduce or stop most pensions and cut health benefits for retirees. In a message to employees, CEO Bruce R. Lakefield said, "to survive, the company must take these actions." Two of the unions said they would fight the motion at the next hearing on Dec. 2.
